Wine From Spain event raises $30,000 for Citymeals-on-Wheels
The Great Match Spanish wine event Jennifer and I attended last Thursday was a huge success, raising $30,000 to help feed the city's elderly homebound. We got so many great interviews for the podcasts, including an exclusive with Famed Food Writer Gael Greene, co-founder of Citymeals-on-Wheels, and Katrin Naelapaa, Director of Wines From Spain, as well as many of the participating chefs. Listen for those on upcoming episodes of both ReMARKable Palate and Food Philosophy. Below is the press release detailing the outcomes of the event:
New York, September 25 - More than 300 Spanish wines served with tapas prepared by 11 New York City restaurants were showcased at Wines from Spain's fourteenth annual Great Match: Wine and Tapas Thursday, September 21, at Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. The evening event was open to the public, with more than 500 attendees. Proceeds from the $60 admission were donated to CITYMEALS-ON-WHEELS, and raised $30,000 for the charity. Participating restaurants included: 809 Sangria Bar & Grill, Christos Steak House, Ditch Plains, Dressler, EN Japanese Brasserie, Pair of 8's, Philippe, Tre Dici, Tíntol Tapas Bar, Tocqueville, and Ureña.
"It is very moving to know that in the middle of great feasting and uninhibited wine tasting, New Yorkers are also thinking of their invisible neighbors. We'll be delivering meals as it gets colder to the people just steps away from where all of us live and work: the needy homebound elderly," said Gael Greene, founder of CITYMEALS-ON-WHEELS.
The Great Match: Wine & Tapas is part of a national tour created by Wines from Spain, a promotional division of the Trade Commission of Spain, to demonstrate the variety and versatility of Spain's wines paired with global cuisines.
"Spanish wines have a larger audience in the U.S. due in part to the innovative winemakers and cutting-edge chefs in Spain who are generating international headlines and enticing more people to learn about and try Spain's wines and food," said Katrin Naelapaa, Director of Wines from Spain. "Events like the Great Match introduce more people in the United States, both consumer and trade, to the latest trends in Spain."

Citymeals now funds 100 community-based agencies that bring weekend, holiday, emergency, and weekday meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers who can no longer shop or cook for themselves.
